Ohio uses two stages to determine child support payments. First, there is a financial calculation based on factors such as the income of each parent, number of children, childcare expenses, and insurance expenses. There are other factors which will play a role, but this is the first step. In the second step, the court will also look at specific needs of the child, parenting time, and other non-economic factors. Obviously, child custody will play a role in this calculation. Both parents are responsible for the financial well-being of their child and the courts will take current and future earnings capacity into consideration when determining the right amount of support.
